A team member first spoke with the caretaker of this hotel in 2005, thus starting our journey of many investigations
throughout the years.
Summary:
The St. Charles Hotel is a fascinating location, with many different energies and phenomena. Our experiences at this site are often unique, and
time and again we have documented unusual paranormal occurrences. Different and rare types of EVP have been captured, such as two voices
speaking at the same time, and video and audio equipment seems to be exposed to paranormal havoc from the spirit energies present inside the
hotel. Repeated investigations have confirmed unparalleled phenomena at this once grand and exclusive hotel.
Location History and Status:
The hotel was originally built as two separate buildings. The northern, three-story, section was started on April 1, 1862, and was named the St.
Charles Hotel. Construction on the southern two-story building started one month later, and it opened as the Muller Hotel. For its time, the St.
Charles Hotel was the grandest hotel in the northern part of Nevada. It is the second-oldest hotel in the state (after the Gold Hill Hotel), but the
oldest one that has been continuously in operation as a hostelry.
Many people of renown have stayed here, including famed stagecoach driver Hank Monk, and author Mark Twain. Today, you can rent a room
for the night, week or month. Also, occupying the street level floor of this hotel, there is a bar and a restaurant as well.
Some of our finds:
It is interesting to note that several guests lived here for numerous years. Long-term residents state they become each other’s families. Even
after the death of a citizen, a few of these residents who spent their last years and days in this hotel remain in spirit form; their energies are still
felt and talked to.
One spirit is Larry Duncan, once a famous heavyweight contender of the 1970s. His boxing name was "Fighting Irish Pat Duncan." After his
boxing career was over, he was more or less abandoned by his family, and spent his remaining years in the hotel.
Several other spirits of former residents, Steve, Phil, Will, and Norm, have remained behind after their deaths. During our many investigations,
each of them has confirmed their presence and personality through EVP and spirit interviews. Phil especially, whom we sometimes call “Mean
Phil,” has made his presence felt. This nickname is, of course, a bit rude, but he was a bitter person in life, and this characteristic seems to have
endured after death. He was known to have a loathing for women; upon interviewing him at one of our investigations, he stingingly pulled the hair
of one of the TVI members. He has shown his displeasure of our presence many times via EVP.
The voice of a phantom cat has been heard by the residents, and captured as EVP, but unfortunately no one has visually seen it, yet.
We have discovered the spirit of a child here, capturing his voice as EVP numerous times throughout the years. On every occasion that an EVP
of this child is recorded, he is calling for his mother. We haven’t been able to identify him, nor has he been available for a spirit interview, though
we have interviewed a spirit of a little girl, who says that she lives (lived) in the hotel with her brother. Perhaps they are related, but we haven’t
corroborated this.
As a unique bonus, during an investigation, a phantom mist, or ectoplasm, was “sprayed” on the camera lens while a TVI member was recording
video on the hotel’s third floor.
One of our most interesting phenomena relating to electronic equipment disruption, which is rather common at the St. Charles Hotel, is the
pictures (* and ** below) illustrating what is often only sensed while in the hotel: spatial distortion and electronic confusion. The pictures below
are each ONE digital photo. These pictures have not been edited (resized but not edited), but you can easily see that the top and bottom halves
of the pictures do not match up, as well radical color differences. As well, in picture *, on the bottom left, there is another visual disjoint and
wrong-sizing. In picture ** the whole color scheme is off, as well as many other things. It is easy to suggest that there is a problem with the
camera, but only these two pictures, both taken at the St. Charles Hotel, and on completely different occasions, were somehow garbled by the
camera’s processor, with no explanation on how they happened. The camera that these pictures were taken with has not had any similar
problems before these photos, nor in between, nor has it has a similar problem after. After (and during) literally many thousands of pictures,
only these two, both taken at the St. Charles Hotel, have been unusual in this manner.
The TVI Perspective:
There are many things that could be said regarding the paranormal activity present at the St. Charles Hotel. The diversity of energies present in
this structure is quite extensive. Though it isn't much different than other hotels, the quality of impressions and “permanent” guests is superb.
Many of the energy impressions present in the hotel are, of course, mostly fueled by the emotionally charged nature of its transient population,
but there have also been many long-term residents who have remained in the place they once called home. This shows, that quite simply, that
even though a structure is designed for temporary occupation, spirit energies can linger for quite a while without apparent effort.
It is easy to become disoriented and “lost” when moving through this hotel. More than simply “parking lot amnesia,” there is a feeling of some
kind of discordance with your surroundings. For example: feeling you are at ground level, when in fact you are on the third floor, or, seeing the
rising east sun when you are actually watching a western sunset. Although the hallways run east to west or north to south, it is amazing how
easy it feels that you are lost walking the corridors. There is some of this feeling in any strange environment; although we have investigated the
St. Charles Hotel many times, this feeling of spatial confusion lingers. Psychics attribute this to the multiple layers of impressed energies, making
it difficult to “stay level,” when the energies are moving and “falling though” each other. This phenomenon strikes psychics and sensitives most
strongly, but many have reported sensations of disorientation when inside the hotel proper, especially on the hotel’s third floor (which happens to
be the fourth floor of the building). Some have even stated that they “briefly” suffer motion sickness upon entering the hotel.
Through our many investigations in this structure, and all of the activity that we have documented, the St. Charles Hotel remains a
marvelous haunted building, and a visit is must for any paranormal investigator.
