After the Genoa Historic Ghost Tour, we decided to go to the Tombstone Tap and Grill for dinner. Kim, Doyle, Lori,
Marilyn and I had a fabulous meal at this newly opened, completely haunted building.
Location History and Status:
The Kinsey House was Genoa's first two-story brick mansion. Stephen Kinsey, one of the original Mormon Station settlers, the first postmaster in
Carson Valley and editor of the first handwritten newspaper in Genoa called the Scorpion, built the house for his bride in 1855-56.
His home stands to the west of this restaurant. This building housing the tap and grill is in the barn for the Kinsey estate. It has been remodeled
for the Tombstone restaurant, and has been reported for many decades as being haunted.
Some of our finds:
Kim, while talking to the owner Myki (muh-kie) about the Tombstone being an addition on her historic tour agenda, also discovered just how
haunted it was. Myki and Aaron Agosta (who is part owner of the Genoa Country Inn, [I met his mom, Bettie] was helping Myki with the
remodeling) told Kim about the men’s bathroom door locking by itself from the inside.
As the story goes, one day Myki thought Aaron was in the restroom for too long of time. Upon her enquiry if he was alright, he came around the
corner from another room down the hallway. They discovered the locked door. On another day the same incident happened again with the door
locking by itself. This was very interesting information to me. The next paragraph describes the lock
The lock is a thick metal bar with a U-shape ring in the middle. To lock the door, the bar slides to the left into a ‘tunnel’ piece on the wall past the
door jamb, the U-ring then covers a metal ‘knob’ thus locking the door. To unlock, the metal bar is slid to the right, the U-ring covering another
metal ‘knob’ to keep the door open.
I believe it would have to take an ingenious and strong energy to be able to slide the bolt and move the u-shape into position to lock the door! A
persistent ghost, obviously, is doing this very thing.
Kim talked to Myki about we Thin Veiler’s ghost hunting team, while chatting about tour agendas and hauntings. When we finished our dinner,
Myki came quickly to our table, stood by me and asked if I could look at the office door, as it was locking by itself as well, and it locked itself once
more as we were having dinner.
Marilyn and I walked with Myki toward her offices and along the way she was telling us about how, lately, she was leaving the door keys with the
receptionist just in case Myki couldn’t get into her own rooms! She retrieved the keys and we discovered that yes indeed the door was still locked.
Walking the hallway to the offices, both Marilyn and I looked at each other…we could feel ‘something’ in this part of the building. When Myki
unlocked the door, there was an immediate rush of psychic air coming out of the room. It was a very strong energy and Marilyn and both moaned
as it passed us. Going into the office it was very hard to breathe the air…a sign to me that there are indeed ghosts. Marilyn could feel someone
quite strong at the door and upon taking a picture an orb was captured on film. In fact, taking six pictures of this door and its general area
captured orbs in all of them. (look to pictures numbered: 141, 143, 144 of Myki and I, 145, 149 and 151 with Marilyn)
I could feel the presence of a man, and I felt that he owned this place once. Talking more to this spirit, he told me that he is very irritated that he
has to walk a different route now. I asked him to explain. He said he used to walk a certain route, but a new door has been added and he is very
annoyed he has to walk a different path now. Asking Myki if doorways had been remodeled she confirmed that the door to her office was new.
The original door was set just an inch or so to the right, now, is wall.
And thus, the locking of the office door by the spirit. He locking this door is his annoyance manifesting due to the different walkway he needs to
use. I told him to stop locking the door as it is an inconvenience to Myki, and also unsafe as if someone quickly needs important items housed in
the office they might not be able to enter.
As Myki told us of the happenings in her office and in the men’s room, I could feel this male presence becoming even stronger. I am believing he
was Mr. Kinsey the more I tuned into his energy. I feel he was a strong willed and hard working person in life…and still is showing these character
signs in the afterlife. I could also see an older man spirit but he would then change into a younger man with dark hair and goatee. I thought this
interesting the spirit showing himself first in older years, then, morphing into his younger days.
Note: Not knowing what Mr. Kinsey looked like; I researched him online the next day and found a photo of him. It was a picture of the (younger)
man spirit I saw by Myki’s offices.
Myki took us into the men’s bathroom so we could get a look at this lock that was locking itself. It is an impressive set of movements to keep the
door shut. Kinsey must be a very powerful and persistent spirit to be able to slide the bar locked! And I have come to the conclusion that the
door is discovered locked at times because Mr. Kinsey wants some privacy when he’s in the privy.
Myki took us upstairs to the Loft, which is now a very nice bar and sitting room. Marilyn and I hardly ascended the staircase before we could feel
the energies of spirits. Poor Marilyn, she was bombarded with spirits as she reached the top floor – they literally took her breath away. I could
feel particular spirits very annoyed at the noise going on at the bar - of course, people talking, glasses clinking, and music playing. The spirits
were upset that the noise would bother the animals…”spook them,” I heard them say.
We weren’t up stairs for too long as the energies were really bothering Marilyn and myself as I could feel the spirits starting to cling to us. This is
something that happens when spirits realize that someone can see or sense them. Their clinging to us can become quite claustrophobic for a
ghost hunter, so it was nice to be leaving this loft just after a few short minutes.
As an aside, when we sat down at our table, I was facing north. In the adjacent room was a fireplace with hearth. On the west side of the hearth
were large red throw pillows. I saw a man sitting there amongst the comfy cushions. He was looking out the window and that was all he was doing.
It was nice meeting Myki, and we Thank her for the fabulous meal, and the wonderful chance to investigate these buildings.
